History
Building Our Foundation
BWM began in 2002 with a few local bike commuters talking about bike lanes and family bike rides, and a catchy phrase, ” I like Montclair — I Bike Montclair”! The name stuck and Bike Montclair was founded by a small handful of dedicated volunteers.
2009/2010 proved to be a munumental year for Bike&Walk Montclair. We changed our name, became a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, developed a website and established an organization structure made up of a Board of Trustees, Officers, Committees and Advisory Board.
Bike&Walk Montclair has become one of the most effective advocacy groups in New Jersey. We have been a leader in ground-breaking initiatives like Safe Routes to School, Complete Streets, Bike Rodeos and many education and safety initiatives, and have helped the Township of Montclair receive more than half a million dollars in grant money. We have celebrated the joy of non-motorized travel with the annual Tour de Montclair family bike rides. And we are part of a statewide and national conversation about how to make our local roads safer and our communities more livable for everyone.

A Personal Note from Mayor Fried
“Bike/Walk Montclair opened my eyes to the power of a group of people dedicated to the common good. Being involved with other citizen advocates is truly inspiring. More than that, it’s just plain fun. I heartily recommend coming to a meeting and bringing your own perspective to the effort.”
